Dessert Day: My Favorite Gingerbread

Can I just mention how much I love Dessert Days! For those that don't remember, each week I try to make one new dessert for Gilbert and I to splurge on.  I got the idea from my best friend, Decoy Betty, who calls the days where she makes a new dessert, Dessert Day. This week, I decided to make Gingerbread.

Gingerbread
fondly remember many winter nights when I was a child that involved warm, moist gingerbread.  What I love most about gingerbread is the smell that wafts around the house.  It's one of those smells that always recalls happy memories for me.
Gingerbread with Cream Cheese Frosting

I used to eat it plain or with powdered suger sprinkled on top, but I've recently been all about the cream cheese frosting.

Do you have a favorite dessert who's smell brings back wonderful memories?

Ingredients:
1/2 cup Butter, softened
2 tbs Sugar
1 Large Egg
1 cup Molasses
1 cup Boiling Water
2 1/4 cups Flour
1 tsp Baking Soda
1/2 tsp Salt
1 tsp Ground Ginger
1 tsp Ground Cinnamon

Directions:
1) Heat oven to 325 degrees.  Grease and flour 9x9 pan.

2) Mix thoroughly butter, sugar and egg.  Blend in molasses and boiling water.

3) Stir together dry ingredients; blend into mixture.  Beat until smooth.

4) Pour into pan and bake for 45-50 minutes.  Serve with cream cheese frosting, sweetened whipped cream, powdered sugar or with applesauce.

  1. I love gingerbread! I don't care if it's a "christmasy" dessert, I'd take it all year round. I have a feeling it'd be great with a big scoop of ice cream in the summer :)

  2. I love when a recipe has such strong ties to memory :) Gingerbread really should get more coverage in its off-season (aka non-christmastime) as I think it would pair well with springy flavors too!

  3. I absolutely love gingerbread! I usually just do homemade whipped cream on top, but cream cheese frosting is ALWAYS a good choice!

  6. Gingerbread is one of my favourites. My mom used to make this incredible ginger cake, but I haven't been able to have it since I went gluten free because one of the main ingredients was stout.

  12. It's impossible to not have happy memories when you smell gingerbread, and this looks like it'll bring back the happiest!

But me though, I can only have it during the fall/early winter. It totally throws me off otherwise.
